Basic Information on
dogs of differing ages

8 weeks to 6 months

When a puppy comes home for the first time, it is a whole new world for it; this causes a lot of stress in the beginning. It’s a good idea to call a trainer in as soon as possible. The young dog has to learn what good habits are.

Housebreaking: Every dog living in a family has to learn clean habits as soon as they come into the house. We can help you achieve that.

Obedience: Young puppies have to learn proper behaviors, and the best time to achieve that is as soon as possible. Training is being done most of the time with motivational approach, with food, toys, and lots of praise.

Chewing and Jumping: Behaviors that a young dog has to learn are wrong as soon as they come home, or soon after.

6 months to a year

An older puppy that did not have the earlier training and is being started at 6 months of age will still use motivational training for the learning process, depending on the dogs maturity level. Some dogs can go to off leash training. Motivational training is done via food reward and toy reward to create association with obedience commands.

1 year and up

Most dogs after 1 year are mature enough to handle the more advanced type of training, which entails off leash training. We can help you achieve success with your dog with humane and compassionate training methods. We train the dog to a level that suits your family needs. For those clients that want to do other types of training (competition show handling, Schutzhund, agility, etc), we are able to help you out also.

Board and Train

For a reasonable fee, we do all the hard work for you. We put the necessary foundation on your dog in terms of house manners and obedience commands and then work with you to perform a skill transfer, so your dog will listen to you, instead of just listening to me, his trainer. Because of years of experience, we have the right time of rewards, and commands and achieve much faster results in a short period of time.

Schutzhund Training

The sport of Schutzhund, now called I.P.O requires a commitment on the part of the owner. We have won numerous awards in this sport, as you can read about on our “About the Trainer” page.

Before a dog is even permitted to enter a Schutzhund competition, that dog must first pass a Temperament and Obedience test called the BH (Begleithunde). For obedience, the dog must heel on and off leash, do a sit and down in motion while the handler walks off, recall off leash from a distance, heel through a crowd, and stay in a long down (15 minutes) with handler away while another dog is working nearby. That is the obedience phase. In the temperament phase, the dog must not show any aggression when tied out with the handler out of sight, while a jogger runs past, then a bicyclist, and finally a dog. The test varies according to the judge, but there is also a part which shows how the dog behaves around people, with people crowding around, and so on. After the dog receives the BH, he or she can then go on the earn their Schutzhund degree in Level I, Level II and Level III, with each level representing greater levels of difficult in obedience, protection and tracking exercises.

Only dogs with stable drives, are able to achieve these degrees. These are the Schutzhund titles, SCH I, II, III, FH I, II; and the IPO I, II, III. These titles indicate that the dog accomplished on the same day, the three phases: tracking, obedience, and protection. Only a dog of balanced drive can achieve this as in the tracking and obedience work different drives are used than in the protection work. The ability of a dog not to break down when given a series of commands, in a long, 15 to 20 minute exercise, combined with the ability to call upon different drives for tracking work (his nose) versus prey and fight drive in protection mode, and so forth, means dogs must be very temperamentally stable to do this kind of work. We can help evaluate your dog, to see if it has the necessary genetic level of prey drive and strong nerves to achieve these degrees in this sport. We have titled our dogs, at not only the club level, but at the national level, in this sport and we can extend our expertise to you.
